Project Overview

Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)

The Giant Magellan Telescope is being developed by the GMTO Corporation, a nonprofit organization and international research consortium headquartered in Pasadena, California, with additional offices in Santiago, Chile. Its mission is to design, build, and operate a next-generation 30-meter-class telescope that will enable cutting-edge astronomical research and transform our understanding of the Universe. Currently under construction at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert — one of the world’s premier locations for observing the night sky — the Giant Magellan Telescope will rank among the most powerful ground-based observatories ever built. Once completed in the early 2030s, this extremely large telescope is expected to become the largest publicly and privately funded science project in history.

Our Contribution

Main-Axis Drives for Precise Movement of the Giant Magellan Telescope

MACCON develops and manufactures the electric main-axis drives for the azimuth and elevation axes of the Giant Magellan Telescope — high-precision, direct-drive systems that precisely position the 30-meter-class telescope, track celestial objects, and actively compensate for disturbances such as wind.

Precise Telescope Positioning

The main-axis drives move the telescope in azimuth and elevation with high accuracy — essential for the precise positioning and tracking of astronomical objects.

Gearless Direct Drive

The drive axes use a gearless direct-drive design. This minimizes backlash, mechanical losses, and unwanted motion errors.

Segmented PMSM with Air-Gap Windings

At the heart of the drive concept are permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) with multiple stator segments. The air-gap winding design enables exceptionally smooth operation for the highest level of optical precision.

Synchronized Drive Control

All stator segments are synchronized through a precisely coordinated control system. Each segment is powered by a Kollmorgen S700 servo drive, while direct phase-current control enables precise torque shaping. EtherCAT communication meets safety requirements up to SIL 3.
