Resolvers are inductive angle sensors based on electromagnetic induction and are characterized by extremely robust and reliable measurement performance. Optical encoders, also known as optical rotary encoders, are characterized by very high positioning and repeatability accuracy as well as excellent signal quality. They are insensitive to magnetic interference and offer significantly higher resolution compared to magnetic encoders. This makes them particularly suitable for applications where precision and signal quality are key.
The measuring principle is based on a code disc or scale mounted on the motor shaft, whose pattern is detected by a light source and detector system. A distinction is made between reflective and transmissive optical encoders, depending on whether the light is reflected or transmitted through the code disc.
