SOFIA

SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy,  was a Boeing 747SP aircraft modified to carry a 2.7-meter reflecting telescope (with an effective diameter of 2.5 meters). Flying into the stratosphere at 38,000-45,000 feet put SOFIA above 99 percent of Earth’s infrared-blocking atmosphere, allowing astronomers to study the solar system and beyond in ways that are not possible with ground-based telescopes.

SOFIA

SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, was a Boeing 747SP aircraft modified to carry a 2.7-meter (106-inch) reflecting telescope (with an effective diameter of 2.5 meters or 100 inches). Flying into the stratosphere at 38,000-45,000 feet put SOFIA above 99 percent of Earth’s infrared-blocking atmosphere, allowing astronomers to study the solar system and beyond in ways that are not possible with ground-based telescopes. SOFIA was made possible through a partnership between NASA and the German Space Agency at DLR.ter erfasst der Satellit präzise Messdaten zur atmosphärischen Feuchtigkeit und Temperatur. The observatory’s mobility allowed researchers to observe from almost anywhere in the world, and enabled studies of transient events that often take place over oceans, where there are no telescopes.

3D Torquer and Auxiliary Drive Systems
for the SOFIA Flying Telescope

MACCON supplied the SOFIA flying telescope with a 3D torque motor rated at 1,000 Nm, along with auxiliary drive systems and additional subsystems. These included a spherical sensor, the TASCU control unit, coarse drives and balancing drives, supporting precise motion control and reliable operation during airborne astronomical observation.

High-Torque 3D Torquer

MACCON supplied a 3D torque motor rated at 1,000 Nm, enabling precise and powerful motion control for the SOFIA flying telescope.

Auxiliary Drive Systems

In addition to the main torquer, MACCON delivered auxiliary drive systems including coarse drives and balancing drives for controlled telescope movement.

Control and Sensor Subsystems

The scope of supply also included key subsystems such as a spherical sensor and the TASCU control unit, supporting accurate positioning and reliable operation.
