SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS
Synchronous motors are cost effective solution for applications requiring one single defined velocity. Single phase motors can only go one direction, dual phase motors can be operated bidirectional (second phase driven by capacitor). Synchronous motors get connected to directly to a AC power source and their output velocity is synchronous to the supply frequency and is also dependent on the number of poles of the motor: :
n = 60 x f / p (p = number of poles)
The disadvantage of synchronous motors is the poor starting behaviour, the limitation to one speed and the danger of falling out of synchronism at too high load conditions. Optional plastic or metal gearboxes are available so that an adjustment to the application requirements is normally possible. Typical applications are timers, clocks, HiFi equipment, shutters HVAC valves and home appliances (grills, micro wave ovens, etc.).
